Click here to view the embedded video.
My first video of the 365 series for 2010 was taken at my first Ski With Marty meet-up group in early December where most attendees came up from Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs. This was the first video I took with my new Kodak Zi8 and thought I’d showcase it here as what NOT to do.

Here are several things WRONG with this video:

1. I was hoping to get everyone in the shot but my attempt didn’t seem to work. It was salvaged only by people saying hello at the same time so that it sounded like there were more people than just the two or three that I showed on the video. Next time, I’ll have everyone group into the same spot…a lesson in video recording with a group of people as your backdrop.

2. I got too crazy with the rotating, which I might hang onto in the future as a possible effect, but didn’t really add to the video this time.

3. I never mentioned what “Ski With Marty” really is. Sounds more like I just sort of picked up a bunch of stray dogs or something and begged them to ski with me. SkiWithMarty is a business networking group where business owners, authors and speakers meet and ski every Wednesday at various ski resorts in Colorado.

What did I do right? Only a couple of things that I can see:

1. It was short…thank goodness.

2. I did manage to introduce my name and my website.

3. Although I’m kind of annoying to myself, anyone can hear in my voice that I was in a good mood that day. And, why wouldn’t I be? I was skiing!!

Exactly 22 hours ago I reported to my opt-in list that my latest site VideoCameraUser.com was officially launched. Exactly 22 hours later, I searched Google and the site has been fully indexed displaying all pages so far.

Some meetings commanded my attention today from 2pm on so I don’t know when exactly the pages became visible on Google, but for sure at 9am this morning Google had not picked them up yet.

That’s okay though. Anything withing the same 24 hour period is good with me for getting a brand new website indexed and listed…and is particularly a good turnaround for a new domain name.

How did it happen?

Pretty easily, but probably the most important five steps I took included:

1. Choosing a domain name that is related to the content I would be talking about.
2. Supplying a core of pages that would be interesting enough to Google to pick up.
3. Adding Feed Burner, which is now a Google product and Google loves when you use their products!
4. Optimizing the site so that Google’s spiders would have an easy time of crawling the pages.
5. Adding a few links on some of my own websites that get a lot of traffic.

Actually, there’s no magic in this and it’s nothing new. It’s the same thing I do with any website I launch. And, isn’t that one of the greatest things about the Internet? That you can follow the same process over and over again and it works year after year.

What’s the fastest you’ve ever had a new website become visible on Google? Care to share any nightmare stories about getting a new site or an old site on Google?

Just remember this moment. There were no videos on this website yet and it took a full day to get the site pages indexed. Let’s see what happens when I add our first few videos and how I use Video SEO to make it happen.

In two days, I’ll begin a quest to conceptualize, create, edit, produce, and promote a web video every single day of the coming 2010 year. I invite you along for the journey as I’m sure this will be a challenge in many ways.

Not only do I have a company to run at HereNextYear.com and more than 50 of my own websites to manage, but I’m going to attempt to prove by example that every busier-than-hell (like me) business owner, author and speaker can and MUST get involved with web video for their website.

It’s not about something cool anymore. It’s not only for those big companies that can afford $10,000 to $500,000 production budgets anymore. It’s not about “too technical for me” anymore.

This is about absolute essential…

Yes, you read that right. Video is absolute essential. And, you’re either going to embrace it or get left behind. It’s just one of those things.

So, my mission with this website is to become a resource center for everything I discover about video over the coming year. Bookmark the site, sign-up for the rss feed or get blog post notices by email, whatever is best for you to check back on this site often.

Expect in advance that I’m going to be having affiliate links all over the place. As I “spend money” to try things, I will be expecting those who benefit from my findings to be okay with me getting a few bucks when they take advantage of those recommendations. It’s only fair and, hey, it’s just business.

Specifically, when it comes to my 365-day video challenge, I will be focusing on 5 types of videos:

1. Educational videos where I pick a topic and attempt to share something I know
2. News videos where I will be reporting on something related to the video industry
3. Interviews of other people using video
4. Entertaining videos where I do something out of the ordinary just for the heck of it
5. Demonstration videos where I will show how something works

So, no video today, because on Friday, January 1, 2010 I will need to launch my first official video for this site. It will be far from the first video I’ve ever created, but will be the first using my system that I’ve outlined in the Free 51 Web Video Tips document that you really should sign-up for.

Have a great New Year’s Eve and Happy New Year to you! Check back by the end of January 1 for my first video and remember my new saying…

“You’re not an Internet loser if you’re a video camera user.”

All the best,
Marty Dickinson

Most video editing software that comes with your video camcorder will be enough for basic editing. As you get more comfortable with video recording and editing using smaller free programs, you might want to someday upgrade to a more robust video editing software. When that time comes, I strongly suggest you take a look at Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

I’ve struggled my way through several audio and video editors and Sony Vegas Movie Studio is just plain easier to use than anything I’ve tried personally. I’m probably not even touching 20% of what Vegas can do, but that’s okay, because what I do use it for I can do quickly.

Commission Notice: No secrets here. I will get a tiny commission if you buy through my Amazon link. No harm in that as it’s just business. But, I can assure you that I have not received any of the products I recommend as free gifts. Quite the opposite as I’m more prone to wasting my money three or four times before getting it right! I’d say that’s worth contributing a few bucks if I’m saving you that grief. It’s your financial support that inspires me to keep trying new things and recommending them.

Bonus to This Purchase: As added incentive to buy this product through my Amazon link, I’ve prepared a bonus guide to using all the video products I recommend. These are tips and uses that not even the vendors will supply to you, probably because they haven’t used their own products in the real world. Simply send an email to Marty@VideoCameraUser.com along with your proof of purchase through Amazon and I will verify it went through my associates link and reply to your email with the document.

Technically, you don’t really need an external hard drive to publish video for the web, especially if you use a Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder. All you have to do is get a YouTube account and upload your videos right from the Kodak to your account and you’re set to go.

But, when you start getting comfortable with video, you will eventually want an external hard drive to store your videos long term. For that reason, if you have another hundred bucks to burn, I strongly recommend you simply buy the biggest hardware piece of disk storage you can find.

My personal favorite is right here:

Users of the Flip video camera have all been anxious for the ability to use a connected microphone but only Kodak has it.

To accomplish many of the tasks outlined in my VideoCameraUser.com entries, you will need this essential component, so buy it here right now through my Amazon link:

Always buy an additional battery for your new Kodak Zi8 video camcorder so that you will always have at least one fully charged and ready to go. If you just buy it at the time you purchase your camcorder, you won’t feel the bite of a mere twenty-something additional dollar purchase. But, if you try to go with just the battery that comes with the unit, you will surely be surprised when your battery runs out at precisely the wrong time.

Here is the compatible replacement battery for the Kodak Zi8 Camcorder. Do NOT try to find a substitute unless you really know what you are doing:

Simply send an email to Support@VideoCameraUser.com along with your proof of purchase through Amazon and I will verify it went through my associates link and reply to your email with the document.

Video card add-ons are totally essential if you plan to make video for your website. Surely, video camera makers keep their in-camera storage space to a minimum so that they can charge less and make you have to buy more. But, that’s just how it goes.

After going to the Best Buy’s of the world and searching around, I found that this video card is a particularly good fit for the Kodak Zi8 because of its low cost, 16Gb storage capability and speed. Yes, you have to consider speed (sort of like processor speed on a computer) a part of your decision process.

Don’t even bother buying a video camera without planning ahead to buy a video card too…and here’s the one that I suggest for you:
